Case History

Maira is our only daughter. She is 7 years old and was born with Cystic Fibrosis ( CF). We are living in Karachi, Pakistan. She has just been diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension - meaning her right lung is damaged due to CF. She needs treatment: either Stem cell transplant or Lung transplant - which will prolong her life.

When she was 4 months old we were told that she has a life threatening genetic disorder due to a homozygous mutation of delta F508 genes. Her first 2 years were very difficult because she was admitted to hospital almost every 10 to 15 days with no hope of helping her pain. She was also started on NG Tube (stomach tube) Feeding during that time. She could only take milk and water through her NG Tube. We also have to use a nebulizer 3 times a day along with using suctioning machines to take out her mucus.

Her right lung had a patch of fibrosed lung. Over time this disease process has now completely damaged the lung. Surgeons were unable to perform a surgery to remove the affected lung tissue because her condition posed too much of a risk. She is five years old and due to her condition, is not allowed to play with kids her age or go to school. The threat of infection is too high for her to be exposed to any possible bacteria or virus.

We have found a new alternative treatment to lung transplant which helps repair and heal the damaged lung tissues as well as provide healthy, working cells in lungs which will slow down the progress of the CF. This treatment involves harvesting adult stem cells from bone marrow and that of a genetic relative who does not suffer from CF, mixing the two, educating and activating them to become lung cells, then putting these new stem cells back via an IV line.

This treatment option has given us so much hope. Unfortunately we cannot afford this treatment all alone. Maira has a limited window in which we can minimize the risk for curing her left lung. Please help us give Maira a chance at living her life normally. We've got a GoFundMe page for donating!
